Gynecomastia
GYNECOMASTY
Procedure
Gynecomastia surgery is a procedure performed to remove fat, glandular tissue and/or skin from overdeveloped or enlarged breasts in men. In severe cases of gynecomastia, the weight or excess of glandular tissue can cause sagging of the breasts and growth of the areolas (dark skin around the nipple). In these cases, the position and size of the areola must be corrected and the excess skin reduced, requiring a larger scar. Gynecomastia can occur due to hormonal disorders, heredity, illness, or the use of certain drugs and can occur either unilaterally (one breast) or bilaterally (both breasts).

There are a variety of techniques used by plastic surgeons to treat gynecomastia. Sometimes there is solid glandular tissue below the areola that may require resection and biopsy, while fatty tissue can be removed by liposuction. Breast cancer can occur in men and although it is less frequent than in women, the solid tissue removed may require evaluation by a pathologist. Gynecomastia surgery can be combined with other forms of contouring surgery such as liposuction and performed at the same time as other elective surgeries.
