Breast augmentation is performed by inserting a breast implant either behind the breast tissue, partially or completely behind the chest muscles. The incisions are made in areas where they can remain relatively hidden, usually below the breast, around the areola, or in the armpit. Breast implants are made in a variety of shapes, sizes and with either a smooth or textured surface. The method of implant selection and size as well as the surgical approach for implant insertion and positioning will depend on patient preference, anatomy, and surgeon recommendation. If the breasts are not the same size and shape prior to surgery, it is practically impossible to achieve symmetry after surgery.
